Powered by the Gemini AI model, the update delivers two major features: Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation. Both of these updates bring a new level of intelligence to the world’s most widely used navigation app.

Ask Maps is a conversational AI feature inside Google Maps that lets users ask complex, natural language questions and receive a customized map response instead of a generic list. Instead of filtering reviews for locations with charging stations, you can simply ask maps: “My phone is dying, where can I charge it without a long wait for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights I can use tonight?”
For road trips, a question like “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, any recommended stops?” returns directions, Estimated time of arrivals, and real contributor tips in a one single view rather than top 3 recommendations.
Ask Maps pulls from over 300 million places and more than 500 million contributor reviews, giving it a depth that traditional map search cannot match. It also personalizes results based on your saved places and search history, making answers more relevant over time. From the same screen, you can book, save, share, or start navigating directly. The feature is rolling out now in the US and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support coming soon. The feature will roll out in other countries after success in these two countries.
Immersive Navigation is Google’s most ambitious redesign of the driving experience in over a decade. The map now displays a vivid 3D driving view showing real buildings, overpasses, and geographic terrain as they appear on your route. When a turn or road merge is approaching the Maps highlight lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs. Gemini AI makes this possible by analyzing imagery from Street View and aerial photos to deliver an accurate, real-time picture of what lies ahead. Smart zooms and transparent buildings allow drivers to look further down the route in advance.
Voice guidance now sounds more natural, using instructions like “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South” rather than rigid commands, while the map dynamically widens to prepare you for tricky turns ahead.
Alternate route comparisons now display clear tradeoffs, such as a faster path with a toll versus a longer, traffic-free option. The feature is backed by over 5 million real-time traffic updates per second, with alerts for crashes and construction included.
As you are near your destination, Maps now shows a Street View destination preview, recommends nearby parking options, and highlights the building entrance to make arrival simple.
Ask Maps is available now in the US and India on Android and iOS, with desktop access on the way. Immersive Navigation is rolling out across the US and will expand to iOS, Android, CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in over the coming months.
